Few safety tips to prevent home fires

Some of the main causes of home fire are heating equipment, electrical malfunctions, intentional fires, and smoking materials. Home fires are not completely preventable. Though, you can take these necessary steps today to reduce the risk of home fires. Here’s how:
Home electrical fire is one of the most hazardous problems that threaten both your property and your life. Always hire a well-qualified electrician to do the wiring in your home. Don’t forget to check electrical cords regularly and also check if any cord is running across doorways or under carpets where they could be damaged. Stop overloading an electrical outlet by reducing the number of plugs you have in a power strip otherwise it could also start a fire. Additionally, there is a sticker in all lamp and light fixtures that indicates the maximum wattage light bulb you may use. Try following that wattage instruction before using any lamp or light.
Most kitchen fire occurs when we leave the stovetop unattended. So, Be alert when you using the cookstove. Don’t use the oven if you are sleepy or have consumed alcohol. Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, grilling, boiling or broiling food. When you are baking or roasting something keep checking the food frequently or use a timer. Don’t keep anything that can catch fire away from your stovetop. Always keep your children and pets away from the oven. Do not let your children play with matches, lighters or candles.
Every smoke alarm should be tested monthly and batteries should be changed when needed. If your smoke alarm “chirps,” it is time to replace the battery immediately. Most smoke alarm failures occur when the battery is disconnected or dead. Having the proper fire safety equipment in your home can save your life. There are many brands and types of smoke alarms you can choose from.
Home fires can spread quickly, leaving only a minute or two to escape. So, better you have a home escape plan ready with you!
Everyone in your family should know how to dial the emergency number. Also, , teach your kids these basic fire safety tips to help ensure they know what to do during a fire emergency. You should also practice a fire escape plan with everyone in the house. Here are some tips for you to create a fire escape plan:
- Draw a floor plan of your entire house that shows all the doors and windows.
- Identify at least two ways out of every room, if possible. This could be through doors or windows.
- If you live in a multi-story building, plan to use the stairs – never the elevator
- Once outside, everyone should meet at an agreed-upon meeting place a safe distance from the house. It could be anywhere. Just keep in mind that it is easy for young children to get there.
Fire extinguishers are helpful for putting out small fires. But using it can be frightful if you do not know the proper way to use it. You can contact your local fire department for fire extinguisher training. Or, follow these simple steps to learn to operate a fire extinguisher, remember the word “PASS:”
- Pull the pin. Hold the fire extinguisher with the nozzle pointing away from you and remove the pin to unlock it.
- Aim low. Point the nozzle at the base of the fire.
- Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly.
- Sweep the nozzle from side-to-side.
Also, there are different types of fire extinguishers; not all will work on every fire. You should seek for expert advice to know about them in detail.
